Modupe Akinola, '96, (Psychology) was an intern with UNICEF in Benin. She helped to summarize all the education projects in Benin and created a document that detailed UNICEF's projects in Benin in education, health, nutrition, water, guinea worm, and social mobilization. Sarah Burt-Kinderman, '97, (History) traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico to work with Gustavo Esteva, a political organizer. She assisted him with interviews and fieldwork in the city and indigenous villages. Deborah Coen, '97, (Physics and Astronomy) worked at the Institut de Physique Nucleaire in Orsay, France. She assisted physicists and students with an experiment relating to giant resonances, a nuclear phenomenon. Adam Freudenheim, '96, (German Literature) spent the summer in Berlin, Germany working on a long-term study on the transformations in Eastern Germany since the fall of the Wall in 1989 and Reunification in 1990. He worked directly with city planner, Toni Sachs Pfeiffer, assisting her with interviews and photo documentation. He was also involved in the assessment of a building in the center of Berlin. Sara Su Jones, '96, (Economics) was an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. She assisted with the reporting and policy related functions of the Embassy. Thomas Lee, '96, (Biochemistry) traveled to Bristol, England to work at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, an organization that takes a holistic approach to cancer care. He also volunteered at the clinical oncology unit at the Cambridge Medical School, where he participated in medical rounds and learned about cancer diagnosis. John Lin, '96, (Biology) conducted fieldwork and research for the Center for Tropical Forest Science in Sri Lanka. He mapped and examined gaps in the canopy of Sinharaja Forest. Ramsay Ravenal, '96, (Environmental Science and Public Policy) worked at the Coastal Resource Institute in Hat Yai, Thailand. CORIN is an NGO that was created in 1989 to help resolve complex environmental and resource managment issues that arise in Thailand's coastal areas. She conducted research on shrimp farming in Thailand's coastal areas. Christine Sheppard-Sawyer, '97, (Psychology) taught English and Physical Education to girls at Singore, a Catholic boarding school in Iten, Kenya. Rachel Silverman, '96, (History and Science) was an intern with Centro para los Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. CASA is a private, non-profit health and service agency that serves the rural and urban poor in Guanajuato. She assisted with the peer counselor program, training adolescent girls to counsel others about sex-education, contraceptives, nutrition, and ecological concerns. Gabriella Ursea, '97, (Visual and Environmental Studies and French) was an intern with the architectural design firm Agence Olivier Dumas in Maisons-Laffitte, France. |
