International: Funding

Working, interning, or volunteering abroad is rewarding culturally, but not always financially. Don’t rule out a position simply because it provides low—or no—pay! There are many funding sources available for international experiences. Begin your search by taking a look at The Harvard College Guide to Grants (available for perusal or purchase at OCS; the supplement can be viewed online with a Harvard PIN) or make an appointment to speak with one of the counselors in the OCS Fellowships Office. Also explore the sizeable collection of funding resources in Section B of the OCS Library.

Another great resource is the Harvard College Funding Sources Database, a searchable database that includes funding options for study, work, travel, and other pursuits abroad. This database is accessible with your Harvard pin. Interested in finding funding for the summer? Two programs of special note are the Weissman International Internship Program, which provides financial support for specific overseas internships arranged by Harvard sophomores and juniors, and the Herchel Smith Harvard Undergraduate Research Scholarship, which provides generous support for summer research projects in university laboratories or research organizations in computer science, mathematics, the natural sciences, and the physical sciences in the US or abroad.

If you are applying for funding from Harvard, please be aware that Harvard has a policy regarding sponsored undergraduate activities for certain countries that have current State Department travel warnings.
