Working in these fields...

1 plural : money or other liquid resources of a government, business, group, or individual
2: the system that includes the circulation of money, the granting of credit, the making of investments, and the provision of banking facilities

Finance boils down to analyzing and evaluating financial data about organizations, evaluating their performance, and then predicting future performance. Within the field of finance, you can choose to work for the finance staff of an organization or a company that provides financial “services” to individuals, groups, institutions or organizations. Some of the functions or industry sectors most commonly associated with the field of finance include:

  • Commercial Banking - provides banking services to individuals, small businesses and large organizations.
  • Corporate Finance - the “in-house” function which manages the money needed to run the business, grow the business, make acquisitions, plan for it's financial future and manage any assets on hand.
  • Financial Planning -  financial planners and wealth managers help individuals plan their financial futures.
  • Insurance - involves helping individuals and businesses manage risk to protect themselves from catastrophic losses and to anticipate potential risk problems.
  • Investment Banking -  helps companies and governments issue securities, help investors purchase securities, manage financial assets, trade securities and provide financial advice.
  • Investment Management -  money or “asset” managers are on the “buy side” of Wall Street and deal with financial assets for institutional clients, including hedge funds, private equity, venture capital and mutual funds.
  • Real Estate -  involves management of physical collateral for mortgages and a large amount of financial assets.

Your success as a candidate will depend on how well you market the relevant skills you developed through your work and school-related experience, so make academic, and extracurricular choices that provide opportunities to expose you to the kind of work people do in the field. Joining one of the Harvard Career Clubs is a great way to learn about career fields, enhance key job skills, and develop industry contacts, Or, simply play a finance-related role with any student organization, such as managing the group’s budget as its Treasurer, or take a course that involves some form of quantitative activity, such as physics or statistics.
