Working in these fields...

In entertainment management, it's possible to combine an interest in business with a passion for sports, fashion, entertainment, or media. While certainly connected to the performance/content/creative side of the industry, opportunities in administration or operations focus mainly on day-to-day activities—establishing and maintaining systems and processes that form the framework within which creative content is managed and delivered.

This might include core administrative management roles such as strategic planning, sales, human resources, finance and accounting, marketing, or public relations, but it also includes the “creative management” positions such as Director, Producer, and Theatre Director which have both creative and management components. The primary concern with any of these positions is the management of creative content or the processes around delivering creative content. If you are interested in the more creative side of things, then please see the Creative Arts section.

If you are asking yourself who hires for these roles, the answer is all media and entertainment firms. However, there are some major players. Firms such as ESPN, Random House, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Abercrombie and Fitch all look for people to perform these functions and many actively participate in OCS programs including workshops, our career forum, and other campus activities. Other firms such as Sony, Warner Brothers, MTV, Conde Nast, the NBA, and the NFL are less visible on campus but offer comparable opportunities; be sure to check out their websites.

Featured Tip

Showing that you are aware of the business nature of the industry in the application process will help you be a serious candidate. Remember that fashion, film, media, sports and music are businesses with profit and loss responsibilities similar to any other enterprise. Even public broadcasting or other not-for-profit media must balance their budgets by producing commercially successful products and services.
